Once upon a time, there were three billy goats who were going to the summer pasture to fatten up. They were all called Billy Goat Gruff. On the way, there was a bridge over a waterfall, and under that bridge lived a big, ugly troll with eyes like tin plates and a nose as long as a rake handle.

First came the smallest Billy Goat Gruff and was to cross the bridge. Trip trap, trip trap, went the bridge. "Who is that tripping on my bridge?" roared the troll. "Oh, it is the smallest Billy Goat Gruff. I'm going to the summer pasture to fatten up," said the goat in a small voice. "Now I'm coming to take you!" said the troll. "Oh no, don't take me, for I am so small. Wait a bit, then the middle Billy Goat Gruff will come. He is much bigger." "Alright then!" said the troll.

After a little while, the middle Billy Goat Gruff came to cross the bridge. Trip trap, trip trap, trip trap, it went on the bridge. "Who is that tripping on my bridge?" roared the troll. "Oh, it is the middle Billy Goat Gruff. I'm going to the mountain pasture to make myself fat," said the goat.

It wasn't so thin in the voice. "Now I'm coming to take you!" said the troll. "Oh no, don't take me. Wait a bit, and the big Billy Goat Gruff will come. He is much, much bigger." "All right, then!" said the troll.

Soon after came the big Billy Goat Gruff. Trip trap, trip trap, trip trap, went the bridge. He was so heavy that the bridge creaked and groaned under him. "Who's that tramping on my bridge?" roared the troll. "It's the big Billy Goat Gruff!" said the goat in a deep, gruff voice.

"Now I'm coming to get you!" screamed the troll. "Yes, come on! I have two spears to poke your eyes out with! I have two big boulders to crush both marrow and bone!" said the goat, and then he charged at the troll.

It poked out its eyes, crushed both marrow and bone, and butted it into the waterfall. Then it went to the summer pasture.

There the goats became so fat, so fat, that they could barely walk back home. And if the fat hasn't gone off them, they are still fat. Snip, snap, snout, so the tale is told out.
